Fall and winter in Snohomish County mean rain, and plenty of it. The good news is that a wet weekend near Marysville, WA can still be a great family trip. You just need a few indoor plans and a warm place to come home to.
Here are our favorite rainy day ideas near Marysville and Tulalip, about an hour north of Seattle.
Hibulb Cultural Center in Tulalip
The Hibulb Cultural Center is one of the best indoor stops in the area, and it is just off I-5 at the Marine Drive exit (exit 199). Run by the Tulalip Tribes, it shares the history and living culture of the Tulalip people through about 23,000 square feet of exhibits.
- A main gallery and rotating temporary exhibits. The current featured exhibit is Woven Ways: The Gift of Coast Salish Basketry.
- A longhouse, plus a canoe hall where you can see traditional canoes up close, a big favorite with kids
- A gift shop for a souvenir or early holiday gift
- A 50-acre natural history preserve of forest and wetlands if the rain lets up
The center is closed on Mondays and offers a family admission rate. Check their website for current hours and prices before you go.
Shopping and dining at Quil Ceda Village
Just across the freeway, Quil Ceda Village is home to Seattle Premium Outlets plus a cluster of restaurants and stores. It is an easy way to spend a drizzly afternoon, and holiday shopping season is right around the corner. Bring a good umbrella, since the outlets are an open-air mall.
A night out for the grown-ups
If the adults want an evening out, Tulalip Resort Casino and Quil Ceda Creek Casino are both close by. Many families visiting relatives in the area split the evening: one group heads out while the other stays in with a movie.
Come home to a cozy creekside suite
The best part of a rainy day is getting warm afterward. The Creekside Suite in Marysville is a boho ground-floor guest suite with its own private entrance, built for exactly that.
- Electric fireplace with two comfy chairs in front of it
- 75-inch TV with Roku for family movie night
- Full kitchen and a Keurig for hot cocoa, coffee and tea
- Washer and dryer for wet jackets and muddy jeans
- Sleeps up to 6 with a queen bed, sofa bed and air mattress
- Fast 383 Mbps Wi-Fi and a desk if someone has to check in on work
When the sky clears, step out to the creekside patio, fenced yard, hammock and fire pit. There is parking for 4 cars, and the suite is about 1.5 miles from I-5, within walking distance of shopping, gas and dining.
Good to know
The host family lives upstairs, and there are stairs down to the suite. Quiet hours are 10 PM to 7 AM, and pets are not allowed. Lake Stevens and Arlington are both a short drive away if you want to explore more of the area.
